W&L Baseball Downs Savannah College Of Art & Design, 7-6

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) went 3-for-5 and scored four runs to help lift the Generals to a 7-6 victory over Savannah College of Art & Design on Friday afternoon at Smith Field.

After the Bees assumed a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first, the Generals responded with a pair of runs to claim a 2-1 lead after the first inning. Junior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkely Prep) recorded an RBI groundout, while sophomore catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) laced an RBI single to leftfield.

The Generals (18-13-1) extended their advantage to 3-1 as Mulhern drove in Littlehale with a third inning RBI groundout. W&L plated two more runs in the fifth to push its lead to 5-1 on an RBI double from Gladysz and a sacrifice fly by sophomore leftfielder Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett).

SCAD cut its deficit to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the top half of the sixth, however, the Generals responded with a single tally in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Gladysz to again claim a three-run lead (6-3). The Bees managed to cut the W&L lead to one (6-5) with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, however, W&L senior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) provided the Generals with an insurance run and a 7-5 lead with an RBI double in the eighth. SCAD freshman third baseman Scott Frederick (Savannah, Ga./Lafayette Jefferson) provided a ninth inning RBI single for the final run of the game.

W&L sophomore pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) earned the victory and moved to 6-3 on the season. The lefty fired 7 1/3 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, walking one and striking out four. Junior Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up his third save of the season. SCAD sophomore Anthony Perez (Miami, Fla./Coral Gables) took the loss as he lasted 2 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs, two earned.

Gladysz finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Mulhern drove in a pair of runs. SCAD (21-18) was led offensively by senior first baseman Ryan Fickle (Cameron Park, Calif./El Dorado) who was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Frederick also drove in two runs for the Bees.

The Generals return to action when they host the Bees on Saturday afternoon. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
