W&L Baseball Splits With West Virginia Tech

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) drew a two-out, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Generals to a 4-3 victory over West Virginia Tech in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Smith Field. In the second game, Tech freshman shortstop Cody Yerian (Ashville, Ohio) hit a two-run home run in the third inning and the Golden Bears held on for a 2-1 victory.

In the opener, the Golden Bears assumed a 2-0 after the top of the fourth on a pair of RBI singles. However, the Generals responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth to knot the game at 2-2. Kozora drove in a run with a double to centerfield, while senior rightfielder Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) delivered an RBI single to rightfield.

W&L (17-13-1) grabbed its first lead of the game (3-2) in the fifth as junior centerfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) hit a towering home run that struck the leftfield foul poll. After the Golden Bears tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top half of the seventh, the Generals loaded the bases with two-outs to set up Kozora's walk-off walk.

Junior Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) earned the victory as he relieved sophomore Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) in the seventh inning after Dean allowed the first Golden Bear to reach base.

Sophomore Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) took the loss in the second game, despite pitching five innings of four-hit ball. He struck out two and walked a pair.

Freshman Brad Nichell (Grassy Meadow, W.Va.) earned the victory as he scattered three hits over five innings. He allowed one run, walked one and struck out four. Junior Matt Sosebee (Van, W. Va.) picked up the save as he struck out the side in the seventh.

Hanson finished the doubleheader a combined 3-for-6 with a run scored, while Gladysz drove in W&L's lone run in the second game. Withrow paced the Golden Bears (11-25) offensively as he was a combined 4-for-7 with and run batted in.

W&L will return to action when it hosts Savannah College of Art & Design on Friday at 3:00 pm.
