Generals Clipped by Bullets, 10-7

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Second-ranked Gettysburg broke open a tie game (6-6) late in the third quarter by scoring four straight goals en route to a 10-7 win over sixth-ranked Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Bullets (3-0) began their run with 21 seconds remaining in the third quarter as sophomore attackman Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) found the net unassisted for a 7-6 lead. Van Nostrand scored again with 9:11 remaining in the game off an assist from sophomore attackman Nick Purkat (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) to give the Bullets an 8-6 edge. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Smith (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) then fed senior attackman Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, Conn./John Jay) and senior midfielder Chris Baran (Newington, Conn./Newington) for a pair of goals in the final 4:11 for a 10-6 Gettysburg lead. W&L senior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored unassisted with 26 seconds remaining to provide the final margin.

The game was tightly contested throughout as neither team led by more than two goals until the Gettysburg run. W&L began the scoring as sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) scored off an assist from freshman attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) just 56 seconds into the game. Bremer scored off an assist from Purkat to knot that game at 1-1 with 9:28 left in the opening quarter, but the Generals again retaliated as junior midfielder Rob Brown (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) scored off an asisst from senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) just 2:01 later. The Bullets scored the game's next three goals to take a 4-2 lead, however, Fink and sophomore midfielder Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) scored for the Generals to send the game into the half tied at 4-4.

Washington and Lee was led by Fink, who scored two goals and assisted on another. Molinelli notched three assists, while Barnett scored two goals. Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) was solid in goal, posting 13 saves.

Van Nostrand led the Bullets with three goals and two assists. Purkat notched two goals and two assists, while Bremer totaled three goals and one assist. Junior goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md./Loyola) was spectacular in goal for Gettysburg, stopping 16 shots, including several from point-blank range.

For the game, W&L held a 37-30 advantage on shots, a 40-29 edge in ground balls and a 15-6 advantage on faceoffs, but could not overcome seven penalties and three extra-man goals for the Bullets.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Saturday as it plays 18th-ranked Franklin & Marshall. The game is slated to take place at Loyola-Blakefield High School in Baltimore, Md., at 1:00 pm.
