LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team won its fourth straight contest as it knocked off Lynchburg, 15-11, in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals (6-2, 3-0) fell behind 3-0 nine minutes into the contest, however, scored the game's next four goals to assume a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period. W&L sophomore midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored at the 14:10 mark of the second period to give the Generals a 5-3 lead, but the Hornets tacked on a pair of goals over the next three minutes to knot the game at 5-5 with 12:57 left in the half.
The Generals responded with four straight goals, highlighted by two goals from senior attacker Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) to assume a 9-5 lead with 4:32 left in the first half. Lynchburg's Billy McCulloch netted a tally at the 2:59 mark to cut the W&L lead to 9-6 at halftime.
Barnett began the second half with his third score of the game at the 14:03 mark to push the Generals advantage to 10-6. After two Lynchburg goals cut the deficit to two goals (10-8), Barnett again extended the W&L lead to a three-goal margin on an unassisted score with 11:06 left in the third. However, the Hornets recorded two more goals to close out the third period trailing, 11-10.
W&L opened the final period with three consecutive goals, including a pair by sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) to claim a 14-10 lead with 8:31 left. Following a goal by Lynchburg's Kevin Reineke with 7:46 left, Martin rounded out the scoring with a tally off an assist from senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) with 6:28 left in the game.
Barnett led the Generals offensive attack with four goals, while Fink added three goals and one assist and Martin chipped in with three scores and two assists. Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) stopped 16 shots between the pipes for W&L.
Paul Venturella and Reineke each registered three goals for Lynchburg, while Chris Johnson made 12 saves.
The Generals return to action when they host neighborhood-rival VMI in the Lee-Jackson game on Wednesday evening. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 pm on the W&L Turf Field.
