LEXINGTON, Va. -- Fifth-ranked Washington and Lee used a four-goal spurt in the final 10 minutes of action to defeat Roanoke, 9-5, in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. For the Generals, it was their fifth-straight win against the Maroons.
The Generals (4-2, 1-0) finished the opening quarter with a 3-0 lead on goals by junior midfielder Rob Brown (Wilton, Conn./Wilton), sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) and freshman attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport). W&L stretched its lead to 4-0 on an unassisted tally by senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) with 14:30 remaining in the first half.
The Maroons (4-4, 0-1) responded with 12:06 remaining in the half as freshman midfielder Steve Lovecchio (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) scored unassisted to cut the Generals' lead to 4-1.
Fink scored his second goal of the day with 3:32 left in the half for a 5-1 W&L lead. However, Roanoke would answer again as sophomore attackman Kris Davis (Parkton, Md./Hereford) found the net off an assist from sophomore midfielder Colin Burke (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) with 32 second left in the half to make the score 5-2.
The Maroons dominated the third period, tying the game at 5-5 heading into the final stanza by scoring three straight goals, including two by junior midfielder Joe Weeren (Winchester, Mass./Winchester).
The Generals then took over as senior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien), Moore, Fink and Molinelli all tallied scores in the final 9:47 for the four-goal win.
W&L was led by Fink, who notched three goals. Molinelli and Moore both tallied two goals, while Barnett recorded one goal and one assist. Sophomore midfielder Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) totaled two assists. Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) was sensational in goal for the Generals, stopping 14 shots including several from point-blank range.
Roanoke was paced by Weeren's two goals. Junior Tim Morse (Santa Fe, N.M./Tabor Academy) and freshman John Cooper (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) combined to make 15 saves in goal for the Maroons.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Wednesday as it travels to Guilford for a 3:30 pm contest.
