LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior designated hitter Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) went 4-for-5 with five runs batted in to help lead the Generals to a 13-2 victory over Muhlenberg in baseball action at Smith Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Generals, who took two of three games from the Mules on the weekend, assumed a 1-0 lead after one inning as junior shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) opened the bottom half of the inning with a walk. After stealing second and third, Hanson scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by senior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg).
The Mules threatened to score in the top half of the second inning as they loaded the bases with no outs. However, W&L sophomore pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) worked out of the jam by recording two straight strikeouts and inducing a fly ball to center field to end the inning.
W&L plated two more runs in the fourth as Kozora scored on a single by sophomore right fielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville). Junior first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep), who laced a single to left field, would later come around to score on a wild pitch.
The Generals broke the game open in the sixth inning as they scored six runs. Gosselink delivered a two-run triple, while Kozora produced a two-run single. Hanson and sophomore catcher Andrew Riffee (St. Albans, W.Va./Nitro) each drove in one run with singles.
Dean earned his first victory of the season as he pitched six innings. The lefty allowed six hits and one walk while striking out five. Hanson worked the final two innings and struck out four batters.
For the game, Kozora went 2-for-3 with three RBI. In the three game weekend set, Kozora was a combined 7-for-11 with seven runs batted in. Hanson finished with three hits in four plate appearances and also scored two runs and drove in a pair.
The Generals will return to action when they travel to Shenandoah for a game at 4:00 pm on Wednesday.
