LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee sophomore pitcher Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) hurled a no hitter in the second game of a doubleheader to help the Generals earn a split with Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. Kagey's no hitter in an 8-0 W&L victory came after the Mules handed the Generals a 7-5 setback in the opener.
Kagey's no hitter was the seventh at W&L since the 1907 season and the first to do so since Bob Weston in the 1999 season opener. Kagey ended the seven-inning contest with six strikeouts and just one walk.
In the second game, the Generals scored six runs in the first two innings to aid Kagey's cause. W&L plated a pair of unearned runs in the first inning on a throwing error by Mules shortstop Mike Morris (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central).
The Generals erupted for four runs in the second inning as senior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) produced a one-out RBI single that scored sophomore second baseman Austin Allain (Weston, Mass./Weston) from second base. Sophomore catcher Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) followed Kozora with a double that scored two runs. Kozora would score an unearned run later in the second inning courtesy of another Mule error.
Junior leftfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) drove in two runs in the second game with an RBI double in the third inning and and RBI single in the fifth.
In the opener, Muhlenberg senior pitcher Josh Carter (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Rye Country Day) limited the Generals to five hits and recorded five strikeouts to lead the Mules. Junior third baseman Steve Rohn (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) went 3-for-3 with one RBI, while junior leftfielder Justin Graf (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) tallied three RBI as he connected for a three-run triple in a four-run Mule fifth inning.
Kozora finished the afternoon 5-for-8 with four runs batted in. Littlehale went 3-for-4 in the two games with four walks, five runs scored and three RBI.
The Generals will be in action again on Sunday afternoon when they entertain Muhlenberg for a 12:00 pm game.
