LEXINGTON, Va. -- Juniata scored two goals in a span of 3:08 midway through the first half and hung on for a 2-1 win over Washington and Lee in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Eagles (8-4) assumed a 1-0 lead with 21:06 left in the first period as sophomore midfielder Marie Lobaugh (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) scored off an assist by sophomore midfielder Billie Rickenbaugh (McAlisterville, Pa./East Juniata). The lead grew to 2-0 with 17:58 remaining in the half as freshman midfielder Marcie White (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) scored off another assist from Rickenbaugh.
The Generals (5-7) cut the lead to 2-1 with 30:53 remaining in the game as freshman midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored off a penalty corner. Junior sweeper Maitena Moure (Mar Del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) and sophomore midfielder Kitt Murphy (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) each garnered an assist on the play.
Juniata sophomore goalkeeper Melonie Sappe' (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) held the Generals at bay from that point in making five saves on the afternoon.
W&L freshman goalkeepers Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) combined to make five saves for the Generals.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Tuesday as it hosts Sweet Briar for a 7:00 pm contest.
