LEXINGTON, Va. -- Third-ranked Washington and Lee extended a 6-3 halftime lead by outscoring Randolph-Macon, 6-0, in the third quarter en route to a 16-6 win over the Yellow Jackets in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
W&L junior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) [Pictured to right] led the charge, scoring three goals during the run and totaling four goals and two assists for the game.
The Generals (13-1, 5-1) controlled play by winning 22-of-26 faceoffs in the game. Sophomore midfielder Tom Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) did much of the damage, winning 19-of-22 faceoffs. Melanson also scored a goal in the contest and collected a game-high 13 ground balls.
Senior midfielders Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) and Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) also helped lead the Generals. Norton tallied two goals and two assists while Hackney notched two goals and one assist. Senior attackman Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and freshman attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) each added a pair of goals.
The Generals were without senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) for most of the game after he suffered a hamstring injury early in the opening quarter. Dugan is just two goals away from breaking the W&L career goals record (190) with one game remaining. Senior Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) made four saves in 52 minutes of action in goal.
Randolph-Macon (5-9, 1-5) was led by senior attackman Hugh Purvis' (Hunt Valley, Md./Calvert Hall) one-goal, three-assist performance. Sophomore attackman Hunter Price (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) added two goals. Sophomore goalie F.J. Federico (Phoenix, Md./Boys' Latin) posted 17 saves in 45 minutes of action.
Washington and Lee will close out its season on Saturday afternoon as it hosts defending Division II champion Limestone College at 1:30 pm.
