The win was W&L's 13th-straight in the battle of Lexington. Hackney and VMI senior attackman Brad Muston were presented with the Worrell-Fallon Trophy as the game MVP's.

W&L surged out to a 2-0 lead in the opening eight minutes behind goals by Dugan and Hackney. However, the Keydets (3-10) tallied the next three goals, two by freshman attackman Leo McInerney, to take a 3-2 lead with 13:47 remaining in the opening half. The Generals (12-1) then went on to score the game's next six goals to assume an 8-3 lead with 7:16 remaining in the third period and never looked back. Muston scored for VMI with 6:02 remaining in the third and the Generals scored seven straight to put the game out of reach. Muston added a final goal with 6:16 left in the game.

All told, there were 25 penalties in the contest, sending the teams man-down for 23 of the game's 60 minutes. The Generals were good on four man-up situations, while VMI converted on only 2-of-13 man-ups.
