SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee outscored Roanoke, 12-1, over the final three periods and cruised to a 16-4 victory in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Va.
Senior goalie Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) did not allow a goal in the game's final 32:41 and made 13 saves on the day to secure the win for the Generals (7-0, 2-0 ODAC).
Senior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) gave W&L a 1-0 lead just 3:07 into the contest with an assist from junior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School). However, Roanoke (4-3, 0-2 ODAC) scored three out of the next four goals to take a 3-2 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first period. Freshman attackman Kris Davis (Parkton, Md./Hereford) tallied two goals in the stretch for RC.
The Generals responded with six unanswered goals led by two tallies from senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) to take a 8-3 lead with 2:56 left in the first half. Roanoke senior defenseman Mark Healey (Fitchburg, Mass./Tabor) notched a goal 15 seconds later to cut W&L's lead to 8-4 at halftime.
Senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) scored two consecutive goals to begin the third period and Washington and Lee outscored the Maroons, 8-0, in the second half to claim the 12-goal victory.
Dugan, Hackney and Norton led the way for W&L as the trio combined for 10 goals and five assists. Freshman midfielder Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) notched two goals, while Moore tallied one goal and added one assist. Junior defenseman Eric Kontargyris (Woodstock, Vt./Loomis Chaffee) also scored his first career goal in the third period.
W&L out-shot the Maroons, 54-20, and won 16 of the 21 faceoffs in the game. The Generals also held Roanoke scoreless in five extra-man opportunities.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it hosts Marymount at 1:30 pm.
