W&L Takes Down Marlins, 19-5

NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior attacker Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored six goals and added three assists and senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) notched five goals and two assists to lead Washington and Lee to a 19-5 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.

Senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) also tallied five points (4 goals, 1 assist) as the Generals improved to 6-0 overall, 1-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

W&L stormed out to a 5-0 lead after one period as Norton and Hackney each scored two goals. Virginia Wesleyan's Andrew Voigt scored the first goal of the second period at the 12:14 mark to close the gap to 5-1, but the Generals scored four unanswered goals led by two tallies by Dugan and W&L held a 9-1 halftime lead.

Hackney found the net with 12:49 to play in the third period, while Dugan added two goals just 33 seconds apart as W&L outscored VWC (4-3, 0-1), 10-4, in the second half to claim the 14-goal victory.

Senior goalkeeper Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) made six saves in the net for Washington and Lee. The Generals out-shot the Blue Marlins, 48-18, and converted on 5-of-7 extra man opportunities.

Junior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) added two goals for W&L, while senior attacker Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and junior attacker Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored one goal each.

W&L, ranked No. 2 in Division III, will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Salem, Va., to take on Roanoke College in an ODAC contest at 4:00 pm.
