LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee swept a doubleheader from West Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field. The Generals scored 11 runs in the first three innings of game one and cruised to a 14-5 victory. Freshman pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout in the nightcap to lead W&L to a 3-0 win.
In game one, Washington and Lee scored four runs in the first inning as freshman designated hitter Dan Kagey (Marietta, Ga./Lovett) drove in a run with an RBI single, junior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) doubled home Kagey, freshman rightfielder Bryan Mulhern (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) singled home Kozora and junior catcher Todd Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephens) doubled to right center to bring in Mulhern.
Sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) hit a solo home run to center field in the second inning to give the Generals a 5-0 lead. Hanson finished game one going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI.
W&L (14-3) plated six runs in the third inning led by sophomore first baseman Brian Gladysz's (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor) three-run double. Gladysz went 3-for-5 in the first game with five runs batted in.
Kagey and Kozora also had three hits for the Generals, while Mulhern went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Freshman pitcher Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison) threw six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. He also fanned a career-high nine batters.
In game two, Wert hurled his second-straight two-hit shutout for W&L, striking out eight W.Va. Tech (0-4) batters.
Washington and Lee started the scoring in the third inning as sophomore second baseman Todd Johnson (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) doubled to lead off the inning and then scored after freshman catcher Andrew Riffee (St. Albans, W.Va./Nitro) reached on an error. Hanson doubled home Johnson to give W&L a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, W&L tacked on an insurance run when Johnson singled home Gosselink who reached base on a walk.
Johnson went 2-for-2 in the nightcap with one RBI and scored one run. Hanson went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they host Bridgewater at 3:00 pm.
