GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Senior attacker Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored three goals, including the eventual game-winner to lift Washington and Lee to a 8-7 victory over fourth-ranked Gettysburg in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Gettysburg, Pa.
The Generals (3-0) got off to a quick start as senior attacker Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes), junior attacker Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Burke tallied goals in the first 4:19 of the first period and W&L led 3-0.
Gettysburg (2-1) fought back, however, with four unanswered goals to hold a 4-3 lead at the half. The Bullets increased the lead to 5-3 with 13:21 remaining in the third period on a goal by Jake Van Nostrand.
Washington and Lee cut the lead back to one after a goal by senior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) with an assist from Barnett at the 11:26 mark of the third period.
Van Nostrand answered right back 2:29 later to give the Bullets a two-goal cushion once again.
The Generals then rallied for three goals in the final 4:44 of the third period and led 7-6 with 15 minutes to play. Senior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), Dugan and Burke all notched goals in the three-goal stretch for W&L.
Burke found the net at with 10:14 to play in the game for his third tally of the game to give the Generals a 8-6 lead. Wed Cadman scored at the 7:40 mark for GC to cut the lead to one, but senior goalie Wes Hays (Pasadena, Md./Loyola) kept the Bullets off the board in the closing minutes to preserve to 8-7 victory. Hays made seven saves on the day for W&L.
The Generals out-shot Gettysburg, 26-21, and won 12 of the 17 faceoffs in the contest.
W&L will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as it travels to Carlisle, Pa., to take on Dickinson College at 3:30 pm.
