LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore shortstop Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) tied a school record for hits in a game, going 5-for-5 with a run scored to lead Washington and Lee to a 9-5 victory over Muhlenberg on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Generals put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first for freshman starting pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) as sophomore leftfielder Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) and sophomore first baseman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) each drove home runs.
In the third stanza, Washington and Lee (4-1) exploded for six runs to take an eight-run lead. Sophomore designated hitter Kyle Droppers (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) doubled in a pair of runs in the six-run rally.
Muhlenberg (0-3) fought back with three runs in the top of the fourth as the Mules strung together five consecutive hits that was capped by a two-run homer by junior designated hitter Mike Morris (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris). The Mules would tally runs in the fifth and sixth innings off freshman reliever Peter Dean (Vienna, Va./James Madison), but Gladysz came on to throw three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the save. Dean was awarded the win after subbing for Wert, allowing one earned run in two innings.
W&L was led by Hanson and Gladysz, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) also went 1-for-3, scored two runs and drove in another.
The Generals will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they host Villa Julie College at 3:00 pm.
