Generals Soundly Defeat Kenyon in NCAA First Round Game

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III lacrosse tournament with a convincing 22-4 victory over the visiting Lords of Kenyon College.

Senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) opened the scoring just 1:08 into the first period with an unassisted goal. He then upped the W&L lead to 2-0 with another goal at the 9:49 mark before assisting on a goal by senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson). Dougherty then tallied his third goal of the game for a 4-0 Generals' lead at the 5:08 mark. W&L added two more scores over the rest of the frame to stake its claim to a solid 6-0 lead after the opening quarter. In the stanza, W&L outshot the Lords by a 17-1 margin.

W&L (15-1) continued to extend its lead at the start of the second, opening up an 8-0 advantage before sophomore midfielder Mike Glancy (Rehoboth, Mass./Pomfret) got the Lords on the scoreboard with a goal off an assist from senior defender Kurt Cross (Bellvue, Wash./Overlake). With the score standing at 8-1, Brown and junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mtn. Lakes) tallied back-to-back goals to catapult W&L into the halftime break with a 10-1 advantage.

The Generals continued their torrid pace in the second half as they outscored Kenyon (13-2) by a 12-3 margin for the final score of 22-4. The 18-goal differential marks the largest margin of victory in W&L's NCAA Tournament history. With the win, Washington and Lee ties the school record for wins in a season with 15.

W&L was led in scoring by Dougherty, who amassed six goals and three assists on the afternoon. Dugan chipped in with five goals and three assists, while junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) added three goals and three assists. Freshman midfielder Thomas Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) was the unsung hero for the Generals, winning 23-of-27 faceoffs. Kenyon was paced by junior midfielder Derick Stowe (Great Falls, Va./Potomac), who scored two goals on the afternoon.

With the win, the Generals advance to face the winner of the first-round matchup between Widener and Gettysburg. The date and location of the quarterfinal contest will be announced on Thursday, May 11.
