LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) tied a Lee-Jackson Lacrosse Classic record with nine points on five goals and four assists to help lead Washington and Lee to a 14-4 win over Virginia Military Institute in the battle of Lexington played on W&L's Wilson Field. Dugan, who now holds the Lee-Jackson record for career points (18) and is tied for the record in career goals (13), and VMI junior goalie Jeff Neal (Severna Park, Md./Fork Union) were recipients of the Worrell-Fallon Award which is presented to the game MVP from both teams. Dugan's selection is his second in three years as a General.
VMI led the game 1-0 after one quarter, holding the Generals (13-1) scoreless throughout the first 15 minutes and receiving a goal from junior attackman Brad Muston (Novi, Mich./Novi) with just 3:21 gone-by.
The Keydets (7-6) held the lead until W&L junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) tied the game on an unassisted goal 1:42 into the second quarter. Hackney notched another unassisted tally just 49 seconds later to give the Generals a 2-1 lead with 12:29 remaining in the half.
Hackney's goals ignited W&L as it went on to score four unanswered goals over the next 5:53 to take a 6-1 lead with 6:36 remaining in the first half. VMI received a goal from sophomore midfielder Steve Schmidt (Huntington Station, N.Y./Fork Union) off an assist from Muston with 4:13 remaining in the half and another goal from junior midfielder Erik Siebert (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) with 2:52 remaining to cut the Generals' lead to 6-3.
However, Hackney tallied his third goal of the half with 6.8 seconds left to send Washington and Lee into the locker room with a 7-3 halftime advantage.
The Keydets scored the first goal of the second half with just 2:21 gone-by in the third quarter, but the Generals held VMI scoreless the rest of the way for the 10-goal victory, its 12th-straight in the series.
Hackney tallied three goals and two assists on the game, while senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) added three goals. Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made 10 saves in goal for the Generals.
VMI was led by Muston's one-goal, one-assist performance and Siebert's two goals. Neal recorded 16 saves in goal for the Keydets.
Washington and Lee will be in action again on Wednesday as it ends its regular-season at Randolph-Macon. Faceoff is set for 4:00 pm. VMI's season ends at 7-6.
