W&L Men's Lax Cruises to a 16-2 Win Over Hampden-Sydney

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) tallied four goals and two assists in leading fifth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 16-2 win over Hampden-Sydney in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. The win clinched the Generals the ODAC title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

Sophomore midfielder Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) opened the scoring with 7:36 remaining in the opening period as he found the back of the net off an assist from Dugan. Dugan tallied two more goals before the half as the Generals held a 6-1 lead heading into the locker room.

W&L (12-1, 5-0) extended its lead to 11-1 after three quarters and emptied the bench during the fourth period in cruising to the the 14-goal victory, its ninth win in a row this season. In addition to Dugan's outstanding afternoon, the Generals received several stellar contributions. Junior midfielders Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) and Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) each notched four points on the day. Norton tallied three goals and one assist, while Hackney scored two goals and dished two assists. Senior attackmen Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) and Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) both totaled three points. Brown notched two goals and an assist, while Dougherty had one goal and two assists.

Hampden-Sydney (8-6, 3-3) was led by freshman attackman Chris Lucas (Fairfax Station, Va./Paul VI), who totaled one goal and one assist. He ends the season as the Tigers' leading scorer with 34 goals and 19 assists for 53 points.

Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) and senior Dan Grattan (Vienna, Va./Marshall) combined to make 12 saves in goal for W&L, while junior Scott Fava (Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin) and sophomore Alexander Ayers (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) combined on 12 saves for the Tigers.

Washington and Lee will resume action next Saturday, April 29, as it hosts cross-town rival Virginia Military Institute in a 2:00 pm contest.
