W&L Men's Lax Soundly Defeats Guilford, 17-3

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and sophomore Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) each notched three goals and two assists in leading Washington and Lee to a 17-3 victory over Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

W&L (10-1, 4-0 ODAC) struck first in the contest when Barnett converted off a feed from Hackney at the 11:43 mark of the first period. The Quakers quickly retaliated, tying the score at 1-1 on a Nate Goodman goal just 1:31 later. Senior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) once again put W&L ahead when he connected for an unassisted goal at the 4:03 mark of the opening stanza. With just one second left in the quarter, junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) beat the buzzer with a goal off a Hackney assist, propelling the Generals to a 3-1 lead. W&L would increase the margin to 5-1 at the half.

Guilford (2-8, 0-5 ODAC) pulled within 5-2 with a goal by Colin Smith to open the second half, but the Generals quickly dismissed any upset hopes by the Quakers, scoring 10 unanswered goals for a 15-2 cushion with 10:31 left in the game. From there, W&L eased to the 14-goal victory.

W&L will return to action on Monday, April 17, when it hosts Whittier in a 3:30 pm non-conference affair.
