W&L Men's Lax Defeats Roanoke, 16-12

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored six goals and assisted on another to help lead fourth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 16-12 win over Roanoke in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Generals surged to an early 5-2 lead after the first quarter, however, the Maroons charged back in the second quarter to with five straight goals, two by freshman attackman Andy Bonasera (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), to take a 7-5 lead with 8:10 remaining in the half. W&L then responded with three unanswered goals of its own to claim an 8-7 lead with 5:29 left in the second quarter. Roanoke again answered, knotting the score at 8-8 on a goal by sophomore midfielder Daryl Pinto (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) off an assist from Bonasera with 3:17 remaining in the half.

The Generals (7-1, 2-0) climbed back in front by a 9-8 count as junior midfielder Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) tallied a goal off an assist from senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) with 2:53 left in the half. That score would hold as both teams headed to the locker rooms.

The Maroons (3-3, 1-1) tied the game at 9-9 with the first tally of the second half as senior midfielder Jim Cappellett (Little River, S.C./Vestal) scored off an assist from Pinto 4:21 into the third quarter.

However, W&L senior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) answered with an unassisted goal just 1:35 later to give the Generals the lead for good at 10-9.

The Maroons climbed back to within one goal at 12-11 with 12:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Dugan scored three goals after that point to seal the win for W&L.

For W&L, Dougherty notched one goal and four assists on the day, while junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson), and freshman midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) each tallied two goals. Junior goalie Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made five saves in goal.

Bonasera led the Maroons with five goals and three assists, while junior attackman David Taylor (Butler, Md./St. Paul's), junior midfielder Neil Adam (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), and Cappellett each scored two goals. Freshman goalie Tim Morse (Santa Fe, N.M./Tabor Academy) stopped 12 W&L shots in goal.

For the game, the Generals outshot Roanoke, 51-23, and won 25 of 32 faceoffs. Washington and Lee will return to action on April 9 as it travels to Lynchburg for a 2:00 pm contest with the Hornets.
