LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) accounted for one goal and five assists to help lead fifth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 22-4 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The Generals surged out to a quick 5-0 lead with 4:22 gone-by in the first quarter. The Blue Marlins had not possessed the ball on their offensive end for even one possession to that point. The lead would grow to 7-0 with 2:23 remaining in the opening quarter before Virginia Wesleyan senior midfielder Art Hamilton (Alexandria, Va./Robert E. Lee) got the Blue Marlins (3-4, 0-1) on the board with an unassisted goal with 19 seconds remaining in the first.
From there, the Generals (6-1, 1-0) would go on to reel off six goals in a row to assume a 13-1 lead with 4:25 remaining in the half before Hamilton scored another unassisted tally to make the score 13-2 at the half. The Generals would cruise from there for the 18-goal win.
Senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) notched four goals and two assists, while junior midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) scored four goals. Junior midfielder Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes), and senior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) each chipped in with three goals for the Generals. Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola), senior Dan Grattan (Vienna, Va./Marshall), and freshman Brandon Ross (Harwood, Md./St. Albans) combined to stop nine shots in goal for W&L.
Virginia Wesleyan was led by Hamilton, who scored three goals. Sophomore goalie Jeff Trench (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) posted 19 saves for the Marlins.
Washington and Lee held a 59-19 advantage in shots and won 21 of 27 faceoffs during the game.
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they host arch-rival Roanoke in a 3:30 pm contest.
