LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team rode two strong starting pitching performances to a doubleheader sweep over West Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon. The Generals won the first contest by a score of 3-2 before taking the nightcap, 5-3.
W&L (11-9) received a tremendous pitching effort from Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) in the opener, as the freshman went the distance allowing only three hits and no earned runs while earning his fifth victory of the season. The Generals and Bears were tied entering the bottom of the seventh, but W&L senior Schuyler Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) belted a game-winning RBI single, scoring Hanson to end the game. Jon Abner took the hard-luck loss for the Bears (0-7).
In the nightcap, W&L senior righthander Kevin Swenson (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) earned his first career victory, hurling 6 1/3 innings of seven-hit ball for the win. Freshman Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) and senior Mike Elder (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) led the Generals with two hits apiece. Travis Johnson connected for two hits for W. Va. Tech. Freshman Brian Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) worked a perfect 2/3 of an inning for his first career save.
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday, March 22, when they travel to Bridgewater for a 3:00 pm ODAC contest.
