Generals Fall in Close Match-Up With Gettysburg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Fourth-ranked Gettysburg held second-ranked Washington and Lee to just eight shots and one goal in the second half in defeating the Generals, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Va. The game marked the first time W&L has lost when allowing eight goals or less since the 1993 season.

Washington and Lee struck first in the contest as sophomore midfielder Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored off an assist from senior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) with 8:50 remaining in the first quarter. The Bullets then knotted the score at 1-1 on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Mark Pollak (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) just 1:12 later. Gettysburg then took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter as sophomore midfielder Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) scored off an assist from senior attackman Ross Garretson (New Hope, Pa./Germantown Academy) with 1:07 left in the opening quarter.

W&L would strike just 1:59 into the second quarter as junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored off an assist from junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) to tie the game at 2-2. Gettysburg then retaliated with 9:30 remaining in the first half as junior midfielder Tommy Pearce (Chestertown, Md./Woodberry Forest) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Pete Milliman (Rochester, N.Y./Canterbury) to give the Bullets a 3-2 advantage. However, the Generals (3-1) would knot the score again as Dugan found the back of the net off an assist from Dougherty. The score would remain 3-3 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

Once again, Gettysburg (2-0) struck first and took a 4-3 lead with 9:55 remaining in the third quarter as Garretson tallied an unassisted goal. The Generals then tied the game again, this time on a goal by senior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) off an assist from sophomore midfielder David Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) as time expired in the third quarter.

Gettysburg once again forged ahead (5-4) with just 1:04 gone in the fourth quarter as sophomore attackman Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, Conn./John Jay) scored off an assist from senior defenseman Adam Aiello (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville). The Bullets then held the Generals scoreless and added an insurance goal by Pearce with 46 second left to walk away with the 6-4 win, their first against the Generals in their last five tries.

Junior Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made 12 saves in goal for the Generals, while senior Andrew Barter (North Brookfield, Mass./Tabor Academy) stopped nine shots for Gettysburg.

Washington and Lee will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Dickinson College in a 3:00 pm contest.
