GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored five goals and dished out five assists to help lead the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 23-7 win over Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals (2-0) opened the game with three consecutive goals, two by Dugan, for a 3-0 lead just 6:35 into the contest. A John Neff goal got the Pride on the board, but the Generals would answer with three straight scores en route to an 11-2 halftime advantage.
Dugan scored the first two goals of the second half, putting W&L ahead 13-2 with 8:57 remaining in the third period. From there, the Generals would cruise to the 16-goal victory.
Junior midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) chipped in four goals and an assist, while senior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) added three goals. Other Generals with multiple goals included senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) with two goals and an assist along with junior attackman Tom Burke (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and sophomore midfielder Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) with two apiece.
Greensboro (0-1) was led by Bill Zopp, who scored three goals. Matt Riordan chipped in with two goals of his own.
Three W&L goaltenders combined to make 8 saves for the Generals.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday, March 4, as it hosts Washington College in a 1:30 pm contest at Wilson Field.
