W&L Sweeps Doubleheader From Muhlenberg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team slugged its way to a sweep of an afternoon doubleheader against Muhlenberg College on Saturday in Lexington. The Generals won the first seven-inning contest by a score of 4-3 before blasting the Mules by a score of 17-1 in the second game.

Senior righthander David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) hurled seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out eight, while allowing no earned runs in garnering the game-one victory. In the opener, W&L and Muhlenberg (0-2) entered the bottom of the seventh tied at 3-3, but freshman catcher Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) singled in senior outfielder Jon Madden (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) with the game-winning run to propel the Generals to victory. Mules hurler Tim Haberbusch was the hard-luck loser, giving up just three earned runs in going the distance.

In the nightcap, W&L (4-4) was led at the plate by senior second-baseman Mike Elder (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) who went 2-for-3, knocking in four RBI and scoring two runs. Littlehale once again swung a hot bat, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and scoring twice. Freshman standout Michael Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) pitched six strong innings to earn the win, surrendering just one earned run on four hits while striking out five. Senior David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) went 2-for-3 at the plate, collecting two RBI while scoring three runs.

W&L will return to action on Saturday, March 4, as it opens its ODAC schedule with a doubleheader against Emory and Henry in Lexington at 12:00 pm.
