Denison Shocks W&L Men's Lacrosse in NCAA Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore attackman Sean O'Brien (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored four goals and added three assists to lead Denison to a 17-7 win over Washington and Lee in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Big Red (13-2) opened up a 4-0 lead with 5:09 remaining in the first quarter and rode the quick start to an 8-4 halftime advantage.

Denison used the third quarter to claim an 11-6 advantage entering the fourth quarter and poured it on, tallying the first six goals of the final period before W&L senior midfielder Tom Super (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) ended the rally with the game's final goal with 2:34 remaining.

Washington and Lee was penalized nine times during the game and Denison made good on four of nine extra man opportunities.

Freshman attackman Ryan Berger (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) scored four goals and junior midfielder Drew Jones (Princeton Junction, N.J./Peddie School) tallied three goals and one assist for the Big Red.

Dugan totaled two goals and one assist, and junior attackman Chris Brown (Towson,  Md./Towson) scored two goals to lead W&L.

Sophomore Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) recorded 14 saves in goal for the Generals and freshman Peter Royer (Avon, Conn./Westminster) posted seven saves for Denison.

The Big Red advances to the semifinals to face the winner of Salisbury/Hampden-Sydney next Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed.
