LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) tallied two goals and two assists and classmate Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored four goals to help lead Division III Washington and Lee past Division I Virginia Military Institute, 9-3, in the Lee-Jackson Lacrosse Classic. The win was W&L's 11th in a row in the battle of Lexington.
The Generals (12-1) took an early 2-0 lead off a pair of goals by Dugan and upped their advantage to 3-0 on a goal by junior midfielder Andrew Jones (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) with 5:06 remaining in the opening quarter.
VMI (5-9) then answered with 11:49 remaining in the first half as senior attackman Mason Ayers (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 3-1. Norton then closed out the opening half with a pair of goals in the final 3:56 to make the score 5-1 at the half.
VMI junior attackman Matt Gallienne (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) and senior midfielder Tony Saraceni (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) sandwiched goals around another tally by Dugan to cut the Generals lead to 6-3 with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter, but the Generals would tack on three insurance goals in the fourth stanza to walk away with the 9-3 victory.
The 12 total goals were the lowest in the 12-year history of the Lee-Jackson Classic.
Norton and Keydet goalie Cregg Burns (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brother's Academy) were recipients of the Worrell-Fallon Award, an honor bestowed upon the most valuable player for each team. Burns made 11 saves in goal for VMI.
Sophomore goalie Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) posted 10 saves in goal for the Generals.
