Generals Upend Tigers, 9-6

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Second-ranked Washington and Lee recovered from a second quarter three-goal deficit to record a 9-6 win at 10th-ranked Hampden-Sydney in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.  The win was the 10th in a row for W&L (nation's longest winning streak) and clinched the 1999 ODAC men's lacrosse title, its first since the 1995 season.

The Tigers (10-3, 5-1) scored a pair of goals just 15 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead with 33 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.  However, W&L would get on the board with 7:40 remaining in the second quarter, as sophomore attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain  Lakes) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-1.  The Tigers then pushed their advantage to 4-1 as senior midfielder Doug Palmer (Vienna, Va./James Madison) notched an unassisted goal with 3:45 remaining until the half.  It was the Generals' largest deficit of the season.  Sophomore midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) with 2:35 remaining in the second quarter to send the Generals into the half down 4-2.

As has been the case all year, W&L (11-1, 5-0) assumed control of the contest in the third quarter when junior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) single-handedly outscored the Tigers 4-0 in the period to give the Generals a 6-4 lead going into the final period.  With 7:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, Brown scored his fifth goal in a row to give W&L a 7-4 lead that it would not relinquish.

Hampden-Sydney would add a pair of goals late, but Brown scored his sixth goal of the game with 1:04 remaining to give W&L the 9-6 win and the ODAC crown.

Junior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) also had a fine day for the Generals, totaling one goal and three assists, while freshman midfielder Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Norton each tallied a pair of assists.  Sophomore goalie Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made 10 big saves in goal as well.
