LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./ Glenelg) singled home senior catcher E.J. Murphy (Glenside, Pa./ Chestnut Hill Academy) in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Washington and Lee baseball team a 3-2 victory over Williams on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.
W&L (13-7) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, while Williams (9-3) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings as the teams headed to the bottom of the ninth inning. In the ninth, Murphy singled to right field, giving W&L its first hit off of Williams senior relief pitcher Keith Surkont (Pawtucket, R.I.). Junior right fielder Christian Batcheller (Sturart, Va./ Patrick Henry) then walked, sending Murphy to second base. Kozora then ended the game with a single to left field, scoring Murphy.
Murphy led the Generals offensively by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Williams was led by junior outfielder Dave Cirillo (Los Angeles, Calif.), who went 3-for-5 on the day with a run scored.
W&L senior pitcher Bob Weston (Columbia, S.C./ Woodberry Forest) ran his record to 7-2 by giving up just two runs in nine innings, while striking out seven to gain the win. Surkont took the loss in relief.
