LEXINGTON, Va. -- Five different players scored goals for third-ranked Washington and Lee as the Generals defeated Roanoke 11-5 in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The six-goal margin of victory was the largest by either team in the series since the 1989 season.
W&L assumed a 1-0 lead with 6:35 remaining in the opening quarter as sophomore midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) scored an unassisted goal. The Maroons (2-5, 1-1) struck back just 1:30 later as senior midfielder Brian Fleming (Summit, N.J./Summit) scored off an assist by sophomore attackman Ryan Kamerdin (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) to make it 1-1. The Generals (6-1, 2-0) then took another lead at 2-1 with :32 remaining in the first quarter on an unassisted goal by sophomore attckman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes). However, the Maroons would again tie the game at 2-2 on a goal by junior attackman Ed Dover (Towson, Md./Towson) off an assist from Fleming.
W&L then took the lead back for good on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Greg Meyers (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) with 10:35 left in the second quarter as the Generals rolled to the win.
Dugan paced W&L in scoring with four goals and Hackney, sophomore midfielder Bernie Norton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall), and junior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) scored two goals each. Sophomore goalie Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) made seven saves in goal.
Roanoke was led by junior midfielder Dimitri Cafuoco (Islip, N.Y./Islip), who scored two goals. Senior goalie Evan Kaplow (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) made 11 saves for the Maroons.
