LEXINGTON, Va. -- Third-ranked Washington and Lee overcame a 2-0 deficit just 2:19 into the game to post a 19-5 win over 11th-ranked Lynchburg in the Generals ODAC-opener on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Following the two Hornet scores, the Generals scored eight unanswered goals, three by sophomore attackman Matt Dugan (Rockaway, N.J./Mountain Lakes) to take an 8-2 lead with 5:42 remaining before the half. Lynchburg (5-1, 1-1) registered their third goal of the game on an unassisted tally by junior midfielder Steven Blewett (Austin, Texas/Westwood) with six seconds remaining before the half to make it 8-3 at the intermission.
The Generals (5-1, 1-0) then outscored the Hornets 7-1 in the third period to cruise to the 14-goal win.
Dugan led W&L in scoring with five goals and one assist and junior attackman Chris Brown (Towson, Md./Towson) tallied five goals. Sophomore midfielder Pope Hackney (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) notched three goals and one assist and junior attackman Colin Dougherty (Timonium, Md./Loyola) registered one goal and four assists. Sophomore Wes Hays (Towson, Md./Loyola) notched eight saves in goal.
Lynchburg was led by senior midfielder Pat McAdams (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), who scored three goals. Senior goalie Marty Jakovics (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) made 10 saves in goal for the Hornets.
