LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee pitchers Bob Weston (Columbia, S.C./ Woodberry Forest) and David Sigler (Strasburg, Pa./ Lampeter-Strasburg) both put in sterling performances as W&L's baseball team (4-3) swept Muhlenburg College (0-2) by scores of 2-1 and 4-1 in a doubleheader at Smith Field on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, W&L junior designated hitter Andy Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./ Wm. Penn Charter) singled home junior shortstop David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./ Pace Academy) in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the winning run in the 2-1 victory. The hit was only the second for the Generals on the day. Muhlenberg's senior pitcher Marc Lenzinski allowed only two walks and struck out six Generals on the day.
Weston, a senior, allowed only five hits, no walks, and struck out six Mules as he runs his record to 3-0 on the season with the complete game. He has given up only one run in 21 innings this season.
In the second game, W&L scored single runs in the second and third innings as well as two insurance runs in the sixth inning in cruising to the 4-1 victory. Junior right fielder Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./ Patrick Henry) and freshman third baseman Matt Kozora (Ellicott City, Md./ Glenelg) each went 2-for-3 in the second game.
Sigler, a sophomore, pitched seven innings, giving up only six hits and two walks. He struck out six Mules in gaining his first victory of the season. He is now 1-1.
