PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Rhodes College scored two runs in the eighth inning to down W&L, 7-5, in the championship game of the Rawlings College Baseball Tournament on Saturday evening.
W&L went up 1-0 in the first inning when senior second baseman Patrick Hall (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) scored on an error by the Rhodes shortstop.
Rhodes would come back with two runs in the top of the second inning, before the Generals tied it at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning as junior shortstop David Hanson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) scored on a throwing error by the Lynx' catcher.
The Lynx added two more runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. W&L came back with two more runs in the fourth inning to knot the score at 4-4. After junior leftfielder Schuyler Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) doubled with two outs, junior first baseman Russell Wrenn (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) singled in Marshall to make it 3-2 and junior designated hitter Andy Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) singled to bring in Wrenn to tie it up at 4-4.
Each team scored a run in the seventh, W&L's run coming on an RBI single by junior rightfielder Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County), which scored Hall, who had walked.
The Lynx sealed the win on a pair of runs in the eighth inning, one of which was unearned.
Sophomore righthander Will Ogilvie (Houston, Texas/Memorial) pitched five innings, allowing four runs on four hits to pick up the loss (0-2) for the Generals.
Will Askew went the distance for Rhodes to pick up the win.
