PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Senior pitcher Bob Weston (Columbia, S.C./ Woodberry Forest) pitched the first no-hit game for Washington and Lee baseball since 1980, as the Generals (1-0) defeated Rhodes College (0-1) in the first game of the Rawlings College Baseball Tournament in Phoenix on Thursday morning. In the afternoon, the Generals fell to Hendrix College, 9-3 in eight innings.
Weston pitched the full seven-inning game, striking out eight batters and allowing only three to reach base. The Generals scored the winning run when senior second baseman Patrick Hall (Houston, Tex./ Episcopal) doubled in the third inning and was brought home when junior rightfielder Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County) reached on an error. The win was head coach Jeff Stickley's 100th in his career at W&L.
Against Hendrix, the Generals led 3-2 as late as the sixth inning. However, Hendrix scored a run in the eighth as the game went into extra innings. Hendrix scored six runs in the eighth inning to roll to the 9-3 victory. Senior catcher E.J. Murphy (Glenside, Pa./ Chestnut Hill Academy) went 3-for-4 in the second game for W&L.
