Eaker Promotion 2026

Eaker Elevated to Associate Director of Athletics Communications

7/9/2026 1:00:00 PM

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee University has promoted Matt Eaker to Associate Director of Athletics Communications. Eaker joins Will Wallace as the department's second associate director, strengthening the leadership of the Athletics Communications office.

Eaker enters his fourth year with the Generals after joining the department in 2023 as an assistant director. In his new role, he will continue serving as the primary communications contact for football, volleyball, women's basketball, track & field, men's golf and baseball while assuming expanded leadership responsibilities in the daily management and strategic direction of the Athletics Communications office. In addition to his sport assignments, Eaker will assist with strategic planning, departmental initiatives and the oversight of daily office operations.

The promotion reflects Eaker's expanded leadership role during one of the most successful periods in Washington and Lee Athletics history. As the Generals have increased NCAA postseason participation, hosted more championship events and expanded their digital communications efforts, Eaker has assumed a larger role in strategic planning, event operations and department-wide initiatives.

Since arriving at Washington and Lee, Eaker has helped shape the department's communications strategy by implementing department-wide website and social media analytics, leading the redesign of Generalssports.com in partnership with SIDEARM Sports and overseeing the department's videoboard strategy and operations for football and women's basketball. He has also played key roles in managing communications and game operations for several marquee events, including the inaugural Cape Charles Bowl in 2023, the 2025 ODAC Wrestling Championship and the first NCAA Women's Basketball Championship games hosted by the university. Additionally, he has supported NCAA postseason coverage for men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's golf while serving on the statistical operations crew for the 2023 Stagg Bowl on ESPNU.

Earlier this year, Eaker was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) 30 Under 30 Class of 2025, a national honor recognizing rising professionals making a significant impact in collegiate athletics communications. He currently serves as vice chair of CSC's Career Services Committee, is a National Review Team member for Academic All-America selections in women's volleyball and men's at-large, and coordinates judging for the organization's Creative and Digital Design Contest. In 2024, he earned District 3 honors in the CSC Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, including first-place recognition for event coverage and second place for season preview writing.

Before joining Washington and Lee, Eaker competed as a Division III student-athlete and later served as a graduate assistant in athletics communications at North Central College. There, he was the primary communications contact for five varsity sports, helped host opening rounds of the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship and coordinated the 2023 NCWWC Region IV Women's Wrestling Championship. He also contributed on-site coverage for multiple NCAA championship events in football, wrestling, soccer and lacrosse.

A native of Schaumburg, Illinois, Eaker earned both his bachelor's degree in sport management and master's degree in sports leadership from North Central College.

The Athletics Communications office, part of the University's Office of Communications, is led by Director of Athletics Communications Sydney Anderson, Associate Directors Matt Eaker and Will Wallace, and Athletics Broadcaster and Multimedia Creative Specialist Ryan Connell. Together, the office provides comprehensive communications and media services for Washington and Lee's 24 varsity sports, overseeing media relations, digital communications, creative content, game and statistical operations, broadcasts and photography while promoting the achievements of Generals student-athletes, coaches and teams.
