Mandis Moves into Program’s Top-Five List at New Captains Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Mason Mandis of the Washington and Lee University men's track and field team moved in the program's top-five list at the New Captains Classic on Saturday while the team posted 25 top-eight finishes.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
  • Keaton Rush secured a victory in the 1,500m, clocking a personal-best 4:00.82 to take first place. The Generals showed impressive depth in the event, with Robert Cooper (3rd - 4:04.21), Thomas Franklin (4th - 4:05.41), and Mitchell DiMond (8th - 4:13.92) all finishing inside the top eight.
  • In the hurdles, Macky Gartley captured first place in the 110m hurdles (14.86), while John Daniels paced the group in the 400m hurdles with a winning time of 56.80. Danny Jakubowski-Lewis added a runner-up finish in 57.38, and Luke Heinze finished in eighth place with a time of 1:03.95.
  • The middle-distance group continued its strong showing in the 800m, where John Hogan placed third with a personal-best 1:58.50. Davis Amare (4th - 1:58.55), Jaden Brighter (5th - 1:59.20), and Will DeLoach (8th - 2:00.37) all finished in the top-eight as well. 
  • In the sprints, Schuyler Clark (51.85) and Javan Hirwa (52.01) both posted strong performances in the 400m, with Clark recording a personal best and Hirwa a season best. The 4x100m relay team of Ethan De Fonseka, Mark Freeman, Connor LaCour, and Mason Mandis added a third-place finish in 43.13, while LaCour also finished eighth in the 200m with a time of 23.00.
  • Field events were another area of strength for the Generals. Mason Mandis placed second in the long jump with a mark of 6.70m, tying for No. 5 all-time in program history with Brian Krupczak. He was joined in the event by Will Vaughn, who placed eighth with a jump of 6.20m.
  • In the throws, Maddox Noll led the shot put group with a third-place finish (13.50m), while O'Keefe McKinney (4th - 13.47m) and Ezekiel Mullins (6th- 13.24m), a personal-best mark for Mullins. Noll also recorded a personal best in the discus (39.70m) to finish sixth, while Leo Avigliano led the event with a third-place throw of 44.00m. Mullins added another personal best in the discus, and Troy Spillman contributed a sixth-place finish in the javelin with a toss of 42.73m
  • Lukas Michael secured a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.90m.
