Three Records Fall on First Day of W&L Carnival

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's track and field team kicked off the outdoor season by breaking three program records on the first day of the W&L Carnival on Friday.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
  • Bailey Hedgemon, Leah Smith, and the Generals' 4x400m relay team highlighted the meet as they all broke program records, while Hedgemon also took down the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record. Hedgemon set a new standard in the hammer throw as she recorded a toss of 51.93m (170'-04.00"), the current No. 1 mark in Division III, to finish in first place. Hedgemon also turned in a fourth-place finish in the discus, recording a mark of 35.40m (116'-01.00").
  • Leah Smith set a new program record in the discus, finishing in second place with a mark of 41.01m (134'-06.00"). She also posted the eighth-best mark in program history in the hammer throw with a mark of 38.18m (125'-03.00").
  • Ana Hodneland, Jesma Evans, Annabelle Sutliff, and Lucie Graziano set the third program record of the day in the 4x400m relay as they crossed the finish line in 3:54.40.
  • Lily Pareso turned in an eighth-place finish in the unseeded 5,000m with a time of 20:45.58. The Generals had three student-athletes finish in the top eight in the invited 5,000m, with Eve Spencer leading the way with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line in a personal-best time of 18:28.15. Audrey Robinson and Sarah Clark finished in sixth and eighth, respectively. Robinson posted a time of 18:45.41, while Clark crossed the finish line in a personal-best time of 18:46.16.
  • Sofia Petrucelli finished in first place in the unseeded 1,500m, posting a personal-best time of 5:02.51, while MacKenzie Moore finished in fourth with a personal-best time of 5:06.68.
  • In the invited 1,500m, Cassie Carr and Olivia Warr finished back-to-back in second and third place. Carr posted a time of 4:36.86, the second-fastest time in program history, while Warr clocked a time of 4:38.74. Amelia Weenig posted a time of 4:46.64 to finish in seventh place, while Reese Brown rounded out the quartet with an eighth-place finish and a time of 4:49.46.
  • Sofia Petrucelli, Cassie Carr, Olivia Lovan, and Kate Odell teamed up in the 4x400m relay, clocking a time of 4:17.73 to finish in sixth place. Bella Timmerding turned in a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.18m (135'-01.00"), the fourth-best mark in program history. Camille Gillum rounded out the squad with a first-place finish in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.66m (5'-05.25").

  • The Generals are back in action for day two of the W&L Carnival tomorrow as the javelin kicks off the day at 10 a.m. with the 4x100m relay starting the track events at 12:30 p.m.
