LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 33 Washington and Lee men's tennis team showed grit in a 6-1 loss against second-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday morning, with one singles win and getting into a third set at two other matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Maroons (7-2) swept doubles play for the opening point. First-years Pearce Lane and Harrison Silver won three games at No. 3 against Emil Grantcharov and Albert Mackey, junior Sanjheev Rao and sophomore Ryan Good took two games at No. 2 and junior Heys Parker and first-year Justin Ilie fell 6-1 at No. 1.
- The Generals (3-5) picked up their lone team point of the match in singles, with two additional singles matches going to a third-set tiebreak. Sophomore Sahil Arora was the winner for the Blue and White, earning a comeback 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) victory over Mackey at No. 5.
- Lane won his first set at No. 4 over Timothy Nguyen but dropped the second before falling by a slim 10-8 margin in the third-set break. Rao fought back from a 3-6 first-set loss for a 6-4 win in the second at No. 6. Markus Ekstrand, however, bested Rao in the third, 10-5.
- Chicago clinched the team win in the first three singles matches at positions 1-3. Alexander Ekstrand (1), Grantcharov (2) and Ajer Sher (3) each won in straight sets and did not surrender more than three games in any set.

The Generals will face-off against their second Division I opponent of the spring when they return to action, as they host Furman on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
