SALEM ,Va. - The Washington and Lee University men's track and field team sits in third place following the first day of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Indoor track and field championships after recording six top-eight finishes. First-year
David Akinnubi highlighted the first day of action as he broke the program's 33-year-old record in the high jump.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
- After one day of competition, the Generals are sitting in third place with 30 points after recording six top-eight finishes. Lynchburg leads the field with 69 points after securing wins in the high jump and 5,000m. Following the Hornets is Bridgewater in third with 41 points while Eastern Mennonite and Virginia Wesleyan rounded out the top five with 13 points each.
- Akinnubi highlighted the first day of action as he reset Harrison Shull's high jump record from 1993 as he clearing a personal best height of 2.00m (6'-06.75") to finish in fourth place at his first indoor conference championship of his career.
- William Dunaway also etched his name into the record books this evening as he clocked in the fourth-fastest time in the 5,000m, crossing the finish line in a personal best time of 14:42.09 to finish in second place and earn All-ODAC honors. Keaton Rush and Sam Daunt finished right behind him in third and fourth place to put three runners in the top five, scoring 19 points for the team. Rush earned Third Team All-ODAC honors after crossing the finish line in 14:45.02 while Daunt posted a time of 14:55.54. Jackson Kodenski rounded out the scorers in the 5k as he turned in an eighth place finish with a time of season-best time of 15:25.39.
- Will DeLoach, Javan Hirwa, Davis Amare and Jaden Brighter teamed up in the distance medley relay this evening, turning in a fourth place finish with a time of 10:42.28. Macky Gartley and Mark Freeman both qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 60m hurdles and 60m dash, respectively. Gartley clocked in the top time in the 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.12s. Gartley will race in the finals tomorrow at 3:10 p.m. Freeman posted the sixth-fastest time in the 60m dash, crossing the finish line in a personal best time of 7.07s which ranks No. 4 in program history. He will race in the finals tomorrow at 4:15 p.m.
