Baseball Tripped up by Berry (Ga.) at D3 Showcase

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team dropped their first game of the D3 Showcase at the Atrium Health Ballpark as they fell to Berry College (Ga.) 11-1 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both offenses were held in check through the first three innings until Berry (5-0) broke through with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Chance Edmonds singled and stole second to move into scoring position before coming home on a Garrett Lang single to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
  • Lang then stole third and scored on a throwing error. Riley Uhls drove in the third run with a single, and Austin Jetmore doubled to right field to plate Uhls from first, giving Berry a four-run advantage.
  • The Vikings added five more runs in the fifth. After Xavier Byams was caught stealing, a walk and two consecutive hit-by-pitches loaded the bases. Lang and Tanaka Mukono were then hit by pitches in back-to-back plate appearances, forcing in two runs to extend the lead to seven. Uhls followed with an RBI single to score Lang, and Mukono later came home on a Generals throwing error.
  • Berry tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Uhls reached on an error, and Preston Dean drew a walk to put two runners on. Both eventually scored on two straight errors to give the Vikings an 11-0 lead.
  • The Generals (1-3) scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh. Jackson Rogish was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Jonathan French single. French stole second to put two runners in scoring position, and Rogish scored on a ground out to make it 11-1.
