SALEM, Va. — The No. 18 Washington and Lee University field hockey team erased a one-goal halftime deficit with three unanswered second-half goals to earn a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Roanoke College on Wednesday night.
The Generals (6-3, 2-0 ODAC) trailed 1-0 at the break before
Margaret Scheurer and
Zoe Dolfis scored 3:26 apart in the third quarter.
Madeline Lancione added an insurance goal early in the fourth to secure W&L's second consecutive conference victory.
Washington and Lee finished with a 28-8 advantage in shots and a 14-4 edge in shots on goal, while the teams each earned six penalty corners.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams played a scoreless opening quarter, with Roanoke holding a 3-2 edge in shots. Chloe Miller turned away W&L's lone shot on goal, while Helenka Chodakiewicz made one save at the other end to keep the contest scoreless through 15 minutes.
- The Generals increased the pressure in the second quarter, generating seven shots and two penalty corners. W&L earned a penalty stroke at 22:47, but Miller turned away Libby Bowers' attempt to keep the Generals off the board.
- Roanoke capitalized at the other end at 25:54. Savannah Bolte sent a cross toward the back post, where Maggie Beach was left unmarked and lifted her shot into the upper left corner, out of Chodakiewicz's reach, to give the Maroons a 1-0 halftime lead.
- Washington and Lee responded quickly after the break, pulling even at 34:20. Madeline Lancione sent a back pass from the center of the scoring circle to Margaret Scheurer, who finished on the left side of the cage to knot the contest at 1-1.
- The Generals moved in front just 3:26 later. Scheurer sent a pass toward Zoe Dolfis, who evaded a defender to receive the ball before slipping her shot behind Miller at 37:46 for a 2-1 advantage.
- W&L extended its lead at 49:02 on an athletic finish from Lancione. Libby Bowers sent a long ball along the end line from the right side of the cage, and Lancione lost her footing while racing toward the ball. Lancione extended her stick while going to the turf and poked the ball past an outstretched Miller to give the Generals a 3-1 lead.
- Lancione appeared to add another goal later in the fourth quarter, but the tally was waved off after the ball was ruled not to have been touched inside the scoring circle.
- Roanoke generated four penalty corners and four shots in the fourth quarter, but the Generals' defense kept the Maroons off the board. Chodakiewicz made two saves in the period to preserve the two-goal advantage.
