No. 19 Generals claim rematch against RMC, oust Yellow Jackets in ODAC quarters

LEXINGTON, Va. – In a rematch from their only conference loss this season, the 19th-ranked and fourth-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team topped fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Championship on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (12-2-3) quickly turned defense into offense to produce the game's first goal in the eighth minute. Junior Miles Furman secured a free kick cross and fired the ball upfield. Just before the midfield stripe, sophomore Kaden Zion let another pass go that got to first-year Rowan Sellers behind the defense. Sellers used one touch to get past the goalie and scored from a tough angle on the right side.
  • Randolph-Macon (9-4-3) equalized in the 22nd minute when a Damien Jackson throw-in in the attacking half found the head of Charis Tchatat in the middle of the box. Tchatat finished the header just under the crossbar for the goal.
  • W&L went back ahead in the 53rd minute when an Isaac Arrowood blocked shot was put back into the goal by Sellers.
  • The Yellow Jackets managed five shot attempts after the Generals' go-ahead goal, but the W&L defense forced each shot off target. Their final shot came off the foot of Jayden Walker with 1:32 left. That attempt was blocked out for a corner kick, but nothing came of the ensuing chance.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Sellers produced his third-straight game with a goal, his longest streak of the season, with his two scores pushing his season total to 10. Zion and Furman both got assists on the first goal, while Arrowood picked up his second assist of the season on the second goal.
  • Junior Ricardo Sanchez and sophomore Sami Seife led the W&L offense with four shots each. Seife and Sellers both put two shots on goal.
  • Tchatat's goal was his second of the year, while Jackson got the assist on the play.
  • Furman made two saves in the game for the Generals and Ethan Chenoweth stopped three shots in the RMC goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Furman became the first W&L goalkeeper in at least 15 years to record a point on the offensive end.
  • Sellers is the first player for the program to reach 10 or more goals in a season since Weyimi Agbeyegbe '25 scored 14 during his final season.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals took nine shots in both halves to finish the game with an 18-11 advantage. Five of W&L's shots went on goal compared to three for the Yellow Jackets.
  • The Blue and White took five of the game's eight corner kicks, three in the first half.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will hit the road for the ODAC semifinals, as they travel to the Hill City to take on 11th-ranked and top-seeded University of Lynchburg on Wednesday. It will mark the third meeting this season between the Hornets and Generals. Lynchburg won the season opener, 1-0, before the two teams played to a 1-1 draw on October 17.
