Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Two late goals downs No. 17 W&L against No. 11 Lynchburg in ODAC semis

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The 17th-ranked and fourth-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team conceded a pair of goals inside the final six minutes of regulation to fall, 2-1, against 11th-ranked and top-seeded Lynchburg in the ODAC Semifinals on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With the Generals (12-3-3) holding a 1-0 lead late in the game, Jefferson Lopez Coreas found the equalizer for the Hornets (14-1-4) with 6:02 remaining. Cristobal Massanet played a long cross into the box from the right side where Lopez Coreas got his head to it and put the ball into the top-right corner.
  • Just 44 seconds later, Evan Pask received a pass through the box that left him one-on-one with W&L keeper Miles Furman. Pask had an initial shot attempt stopped by Furman, but Pask stayed with the play and scored on the rebound to give the Hornets the lead.
  • W&L took an initial 1-0 lead in the 69th minute on an own goal from the Hornets. Senior Jack Travis took a long throw-in in the attacking third which found the head of senior Anthony Careccia in the box. Careccia's header was then redirected into the goal by a Lynchburg defender.
  • The Generals nearly regained a lead shortly after Lopez Coreas tied things up, as junior Ricardo Sanchez found room at the top of the box for a shot to the low-left corner, but Stefan Kapitanov was well-positioned for the save.
  • W&L continued to fight for a potential equalizing goal, as senior Nick Apostolou had a shot saved in the 89th minute. Soon after, sophomore Isaac Arrowood had a good look from the top of the 18 and hit a hard shot, but it ended up in the center of the frame where Kapitanov was waiting for it.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Furman finished the night with seven saves, five of which came in the second half. Kapitanov made five stops in the Hornets' goal.
  • Lopez Coreas scored his 11th goal of the season and led the Lynchburg offense with five shot attempts. Pask's goal was his first of the year, and he followed Lopez Coreas in shot attempts (4).
TEAM STATS:
  • The Hornets held the shot advantage in the game by a final total of 18-6, including 9-5 on goal. Twelve of Lynchburg's shots came in the second half.
  • The Generals took four corner kicks in the game and conceded eight. Lynchburg took four in both halves.
