LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 8 Washington and Lee men's soccer team returned home on Saturday and defeated Roanoke, 2-0, to celebrate Senior Day.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- It took the Generals (8-1, 3-0 ODAC) some time to settle into their offense, but once they did, they kept the Roanoke (3-6, 1-2 ODAC) defense busy. In the 37th minute, the Maroons tried to get the ball out of their box after a corner, but the ball came right to sophomore Kaden Zion who ripped a shot from the right side and inside the left post.
- W&L continued to pressure the Roanoke defense and were rewarded with a free kick in the 59th minute. Sophomore Sami Seife sent the ball into the box, where senior Anthony Careccia flicked the ball between his legs and into the back of the net.
- The Generals' defense did not allow a Roanoke shot in the second half until the 63rd minute, but an Ed Law attempt was not able to get past junior Miles Furman in goal. Furman then made an additional save in the 66th minute to keep the clean sheet.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Zion's and Careccia's goals were both their first of the season, with Zion's the second of his career and Careccia's first. Zion also led the Generals in shot attempts (3) and shots on goal (3), with five other players all shooting twice.
- Law and Slate Danforth took two shots each to pace the Roanoke offense. Both of Law's attempts ended up on goal.
- Furman rounded out the game with three saves to produce his sixth shutout of the season. It was also his sixth game this season with multiple saves.
