Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 6 Generals upend Christopher Newport for ninth straight win

LEXINGTON, Va. – A first-half goal from sophomore Sami Seife was the difference on Wednesday night, as the sixth-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team pushed past Christopher Newport, 1-0, for its ninth win in a row.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Seife's goal came in the 20th minute on a penalty kick. Seife controlled the ball on the left side and cut back to his right just inside the box where he drew a foul. He then calmly slotted the ensuing shot into the low-left corner of the goal for the W&L (9-1) lead.
  • Just under six minutes later, the Captains (6-2-1) put their first shot on goal in the game, as Drew McWhinney hit a shot hard from the top of the box. Junior goalie Miles Furman was well-positioned, however, for the save.
  • The Captains nearly equalized in the 79th minute but a strong effort from Furman kept his side in front. CNU had a corner kick that was sent in and found the head of Declan Karney on the back post. Karney's shot was headed inside the post, before Furman got there to swat it away and control the ball to end the threat.
  • Seife nearly put a second goal on the board for the Generals to cap off the win. With time winding down and the Generals in possession in the offensive third, Seife tried his luck from just outside the 18, but a diving effort from Matt Yates in the CNU goal kept the ball out.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Seife's goal was his third score of the season and pushed him to the top of the team leaderboard in points (10). He is now a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this season.
  • Seife and first-year Rowan Sellers led the W&L offense in shot attempts (4) and both players put two shots on goal. Junior Ricardo Sanchez added three shots.
  • McWhinney had three shots to lead the CNU offense, while Riley Usher took two shots.
  • Furman stopped two attempts to log his seventh clean sheet of the season. Yates ended the night with four saves in the losing effort.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • With their ninth consecutive win, the Generals are now tied with the 2018, 2016 and 2015 teams for the third-longest winning streak in program history.
  • The Generals kept up their strong play against the Captains on Wednesday night, improving to 7-3-3 overall in the all-time head-to-head. That includes a mark of 6-1-3 in the last 10 games against CNU.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals outshot the Captains, 17-7, in total attempts and 5-2 in shots on goal. W&L also held a 10-4 edge in the second half.
  • Only one corner kick was taken in the game, claimed by the Generals in the third minute.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will close out this three-game home stand with a 1:00 p.m. start against Batten on Saturday afternoon.
