No. 19 Men’s Soccer downs Averett in season finale

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 19th-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team put up a 4-0 win against Averett to close the regular season on Wednesday night to claim the No. 4 seed for the ODAC Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless first half that saw the Generals (11-2-3, 5-1-3 ODAC) outshoot the Cougars (0-14, 0-9 ODAC), 14-1, first-year Rowan Sellers slotted home a shot in the 54th minute from close range on a pass from senior Matthew Jenkins.
  • Sophomore Sami Seife then doubled the W&L lead just under four minutes later when he blasted a shot from the top of the 18 and past the diving keeper at the left post.
  • In the 75th minute, first-year Baber Toure played a ball into the box for Trey Peterson, who snuck a shot into the left-side netting of the goal from a difficult angle on the right side.
  • Senior Nati Seife then rounded out the scoring in the 83rd minute, getting a pass from senior Trian Kechagias and curling a shot from the left side and just inside the right post.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Sellers increased his team-leading goal total to eight, while S. Seife held in second on the team leaderboard with his fifth goal of the season. Peterson and N. Seife both scored their first goals of the season.
  • Jenkins logged his team-high sixth assist of the season, Kechagias dished out his second helper of the year and Toure got his first collegiate assist.
  • S. Seife and senior Taha Kaba led the W&L offense with five shot attempts apiece. Junior Miles Furman (76:56) and senior Parker Smith (13:04) shared the shutout in the W&L goal, with Furman making two saves.
  • Gabriel Fore and Michael Milligan were the only two Cougars players to record a shot in the game. Both players put their attempts on goal. Nicholas Dinoia made three saves in the Averett goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jenkins' assist on Sellers' goal was the 15th of his career, which leaves him just one away from tying Bill Sigler '97 for 10th most in program history.
ODAC TOURNAMENT OUTLOOK:
