GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 18 Washington and Lee men's soccer team got back into the win column on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Guilford in the team's final road game of the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (10-2-3, 4-1-3 ODAC) got their first goal on the board in the 27th minute. The ball was played up field from the back and took a fortunate bounce off a Guilford (4-9-4, 3-3-2 ODAC) defender's head, where first-year Rowan Sellers took control. Sellers dribbled into the box, made a move around the goalie and scored.
- W&L added its second goal with just six seconds left in the opening half. Senior Trian Kechagias headed the ball up towards first-year Matt Stitz, who fought off a defender and looped a shot over the goalie at the top of the 18.
- In the 66th minute, senior Matthew Jenkins chased an errant pass into the left side of the box where he drew a foul against the Guilford keeper. Jenkins took the ensuing penalty kick and scored comfortably down the middle of the frame.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Sellers scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season, while Jenkins netted his second and Stitz got his first collegiate goal. Kechagias assisted on the Stitz goal, his first helper of the season.
- Junior Ricardo Sanchez led the W&L offense with three shot attempts, followed by Jenkins with two.
- Junior Miles Furman and first-year William Eastright combined for the Generals' eighth shutout of the season. Furman made four saves in 85:27 of action, while Eastright made a stop over the final 4:33.
- Chris Hercules notched three shot attempts to lead the Guilford offense. Sam Bayer and Ildis Vital-Peraza made two saves in one half of action each. Bayer got the start and Vital-Peraza played the second half.
