ASHLAND, Va. – The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team staged a second-half rally, but ultimately came up one goal short in a 2-1 loss at Randolph-Macon on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Yellow Jackets (7-2-2, 3-1-1 ODAC) got on the board first in the 24th minute when an in-direct free kick was awarded. Damien Jackson played the ball to brother Davian Jackson who fired the ball past the oncoming W&L defenders for the score.
- Davian Jackson then assisted on RMC's second goal, as he found Keanan Kopp in the 56th minute to double the lead.
- The Generals (9-2-1, 3-1-1 ODAC) pulled within a goal in the 74th minute on a set piece. The ball was played into the box and headed goalward where sophomore Chris Ordway had an initial sliding shot blocked by the goalie. Ordway stayed with the play, however, got to his feet and scored.
- W&L nearly found the equalizer in the 83rd minute when senior Matthew Jenkins got enough room for a shot from just right of the penalty spot. His attempt banged off the post and back to the top of the box where sophomore Isaac Arrowood tried his luck, but his shot went just over the crossbar.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Ordway's goal was his first of the season and it came on his only shot of the game. Sophomore Sami Seife and junior Ricardo Sanchez led the W&L offense with three shots each and three combined on goal.
- Davian Jackson contributed to both RMC goals with his goal and assist. Damien Jackson had an assist and four shot attempts, with Kopp's goal going as his first this season.
- Ethan Chenoweth made three saves in the RMC goal, including a penalty kick save in the 57th minute which would have been the Generals' first goal. Junior Miles Furman made two saves for W&L.
TEAM STATS:
- Shot totals for both teams finished identical to each other. Both sides took 11 shots and put four on goal, with both teams taking four shots in the first half and seven in the second half.
- The Generals took five corner kicks in the game, three in the first half, and conceded two.
