Schleusner Breaks Division III Career Rebounding Record in 63-57 Win over Bridgewater

LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior Mary Schleusner of the Washington and Lee University women's basketball team highlighted a 63-57 win over Bridgewater College on Wednesday evening as she broke the NCAA Divison III career rebounding record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams traded points to open the game, with the Generals (16-0, 7-0 ODAC) holding a three-point edge before Jay Garcia knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at five. The Blue and White then surged to a 20-7 advantage behind a 14-2 run that featured baskets from seven different players, highlighted by the lone three-pointer of the stretch from Elka Prechel. The Eagles (13-3, 6-1 ODAC) trimmed the deficit to nine before Icy Keneah converted a free throw to send the Generals into the second quarter with a 10-point lead.
  • The opening three minutes of the second quarter passed without a basket before a Riley Bryant steal led to a layup from Sam Collins. Bridgewater gradually chipped away at the margin, as a Jaiden Polston jumper made it a six-point game with 3:19 remaining in the half. W&L closed the period on a 7-4 run to carry a 36-26 lead into the break.
  • Out of halftime, the Eagles opened with two quick baskets—a Riley Corcoran layup and an Autumn Gentry three-pointer—to cut the Generals' lead to five. Bridgewater continued to push, narrowing the margin to two after a pair of free throws from Jay Garcia. Sam Collins halted the momentum with a three-pointer to restore a five-point cushion, and back-to-back jumpers from Mary Schleusner and Collins sent the Generals into the final quarter with a 51-43 lead.
  • W&L pushed the lead to 12 early in the fourth quarter behind a pair of free throws from Zou Raine and a jumper from Schleusner. The Eagles rallied to within four with 3:49 remaining, but Schleusner answered with three straight baskets to extend the advantage back to 10. Bridgewater scored the final four points of the contest, but the Generals held on for a 63-57 victory.
