LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee University Head Men's Tennis Coach
David Detwiler has announced the appointment of James Moeckel as the program's new assistant coach. Moeckel will begin his duties on Monday, January 12.
"I am really excited to have James Moeckel as our new men's tennis assistant," Detwiler commented. "James grew up in the Atlanta area with strong tennis and great high schools. He played for Tulane and Furman and brings a tremendous work ethic and knowledge to our team. His resume is full of tennis experience from Gustavo Kuerten's Academy to Florida Gator Camps. I want to welcome James to Generals' Nation!"
Moeckel has spent recent years in Brazil serving as a private tennis coach, with additional tennis coaching experience with the Gustavo Kuerton Institute in Brazil. He also served with Camp Sunshine in Atlanta, heading tennis activities, after working as an instructor at Florida Gator Tennis Camps in Gainesville, Fla.
Earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Furman University, Moeckel competed on the men's tennis team and was a two-time NCAA Tournament participant. He then went on to play in tournaments in England, as part of the Girobank Tour, against aspiring ATP Tour-level players.
Moeckel joins the Generals ahead of their spring season which kicks off on February 14 at James Madison. W&L went 2-0 in dual-match play during the fall against Roanoke and Virginia Wesleyan.
